Ramsar wetlands are ecosystems of international importance designated under the Convention on Wetlands, signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971. This treaty promotes the conservation and "wise use" of wetlands to prevent global loss. Over 2,500 sites are listed globally, covering diverse, crucial habitats for biodiversity. In Victoria Barmah Forest in the north and Bellarine Peninsula in the South are well known Ramsar Wetlands.
